Millions of people suffer from tinnitus and are searching for tinnitus cures. Scientists are conducting major research projects to study the role the brain plays in creating the annoying noises of beeps and buzzes that suffers are forced to endure. The goal is to find effective treatment and even cures for tinnitus.
Supported by a research grant of U.S. $ 2.9 million National Institute of Health, scientists at the State University of New York at Buffalo, studied the brain signals responsible for creating these phantom sounds.
“For many years it was thought that ringing or buzzing sounds they heard people with tinnitus originated in the ear. Using positron emission tomography, known as PET, to observe the brain activity of people with tinnitus, we were able to demonstrate that the auditory perception of phantom noises originate somewhere in the brain, not hearing. This changes completely the scientific approach, “said Richard Salvi, principal investigator.
Brain activity map
Salvi and colleagues discovered that when the brain’s auditory cortex begins receiving diminished neural signals from the cochlea of the inner ear due to injury or age, the auditory cortex “turns up the volume, ” increasing weak neural signals the cochlea. By increasing the volume of these weak signals are received by the ringing, buzzing or hissing characteristic of tinnitus. Currently, standard medication or treatment that can eliminate these noises ghosts but are sometimes the wrong way to go when looking for truly effect treatment. In many cases a holistic treatment has proven to be much more effective.
One of the main objectives of the project is to try to identify the neural characteristics of tinnitus. The study will also include the possible use of therapeutic drugs to eradicate tinnitus. This is an affliction that effects millions of suffers through the world. It has take the medical work some time but they seem to be making some strides in stopping tinnitus.
