Popcorn lung disease is a form of bronchiolitis obliterans lung disease , caused by inhalation of diacetyl, usually used to produce butter flavour for many products , mostly popcorn ( thats why is called popcorn lung disease or popcorn worker lung ). Thats in short.
Actualy , popcorn lung is a disease discovered when former employers of the popcorn factory developed bronchiolitis obliterans. After this ocasion , bronchiolitis obliterans was named as popcorn lung disease or popcorn lung ( or alternatively worker popcorn lung ).
Disease developed after workers inhalated diacetyl , supstance used , as mentioned above , at butter like flavour production . The flavour is used for meny other products , snaks , but became ” famous ” after microwave popcorn plant incident. Diacetyl destroys bronchioles(small airway branches) , compresses and narrows them and they become blocked by scar tissue and inflammation. Diacetyl is not the only substance that leads to disease but we will not discuss other forms of bronchiolitis obliterans, dyacityl is rarely found elsewhere , but after researching factory mentioned above , the level of diacetyl was similar to the one found in microwave after making popcorn ( flavored ).
Disease was latter diagnosed on people who were eating microwave popcorns too much , which made the factories to remove diacetyl and replace it with another flavoring substance. Even if it is removed from most of products , diacetyl is still approved and legal ingredient by Food and Drug Administration , but practice proved different , so read you products ingredients carefully and decide what will you eat , and what will not.
